Diminished Ovarian Reserve

What is Diminished Ovarian Reserve?

Diminished ovarian reserve is the reduction of the number and quality of eggs either from disease, trauma, age, or an unknown reason. DOR impacts fertility and makes it harder to conceive. Often women are unaware of this condition unless they are trying to conceive and have been unable to do so. To diagnose DOR, a doctor will order bloodwork on day 3 of the menstrual cycle. This test typically measures FSH, LH, Estradiol, and AMH. FSH or follicle stimulating hormone ideally should be below 10. When it is higher this can be indicative of poor

reserve. AMH or anti-mullerian hormone is a hormone released by the granulosa cells surrounding the follicles that is used to measure ovarian reserve. A lower AMH can be a sign that you have a lower ovarian reserve and will not respond as well to fertility medications as women with a higher AMH might.

How can acupuncture help DOR?

While acupuncture is not a guaranteed treatment for diminished ovarian reserve, some studies show that it has potential benefits in improving ovarian function and fertility.

Here are a few ways acupuncture may potentially help improve diminished ovarian reserve:

Improved Blood Flow:

Fertility massage aims to increase blood circulation to the pelvic area, including the reproductive organs such as the ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes. Improved blood flow can enhance the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to these organs, potentially supporting their optimal function.

Hormonal Balance:

Certain massage techniques used in fertility massage, such as abdominal massage, may help regulate hormonal levels by affecting the endocrine system. Balancing hormones can positively influence the menstrual cycle and ovulation.

Reduced Stress:

Stress can have a negative impact on reproductive health by disrupting hormone levels and affecting the body’s overall equilibrium. Fertility massage includes relaxation techniques that help reduce stress and promote a sense of well-being.

Detoxification:

Fertility massage may aid in the elimination of toxins and waste products from the body, supporting a healthy environment for conception and pregnancy. Uterine Alignment: Techniques like abdominal massage aim to align the uterus and surrounding structures, potentially creating an optimal space for the fertilized egg to implant.
